What Cinnamon does
Cinnamon is the dried bark of Cinnamomum trees. NCCIH states that research doesn't clearly support using cinnamon for any health condition: it is unclear whether cinnamon supplementation is helpful for diabetes or weight loss and higher quality research would be needed to clarify any benefits; a nasal spray containing Ceylon extract might improve allergic rhinitis symptoms but more reliable evidence is needed to confirm that initial result; and it is unclear whether cassia cinnamon is effective as a mosquito repellent. NCCIH also notes that studies often fail to specify which species or plant part was tested, which makes results difficult to interpret. — per the NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health; not medical advice.
Forms & absorption
Two main types are sold: Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), grown mainly in Sri Lanka and called true cinnamon, and cassia cinnamon (Cinnamomum aromaticum), the most common type sold in North America. Cassia contains coumarin, a chemical that can interact with the liver, and NCCIH notes prolonged use of cassia cinnamon could be an issue for sensitive people such as those with liver disease, while Ceylon contains only trace amounts. Cinnamon is likely safe in the amounts commonly used in foods; in larger amounts or over long periods it is sometimes associated with side effects, most commonly gastrointestinal problems or allergic reactions. — per the NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.
