S-Adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe) is a chemical found naturally in the body, made from the amino acid methionine, and is sold in the United States as a dietary supplement. It has been studied most extensively for depression, osteoarthritis, and liver diseases, but for all three conditions the evidence is not conclusive that SAMe is helpful. According to NCCIH, the evidence that oral SAMe may be helpful for depression is not conclusive, and many depression trials were short, small, and of variable scientific quality. SAMe has also been studied for fibromyalgia, migraine, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, and ADHD, but there isn't enough evidence to reach conclusions about its effects in these conditions. Many depression studies used injected SAMe rather than an oral form taken by mouth, and the effects of injected SAMe may differ from those of SAMe taken as a dietary supplement. This means evidence from injected forms cannot be assumed to apply to the oral supplements sold to consumers.

There is also a theoretical concern that SAMe may promote Pneumocystis infection in immunocompromised people (such as those who are HIV-positive), since SAMe enhances the growth of this microorganism.
